Christmas Nuts Stand in Tirana

After a long ban by the imposed atheism of the communist regime, in the recent years Albania has been reviving the tradition of celebrating Christmas, although New Year still remains the number one celebrated festival for Albanians.

People love to celebrate Christmas and New Year in the company of their entire family usually gathered around a dinner table at home or in a restaurant. The main dish is Turkey and the dessert is Bakllava.

Unique for this season are the nuts stands that sell walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds and dried fig. On my way to the office yesterday, I came across this guy selling nuts in his improvised portable stand right next to a bus stop in Tirana. He had the biggest sack of walnuts (from the city of Dibra in the north of Albania) I have ever seen. As a tradition, the tables in the Albanian families are full of different kind of nuts during the holiday season so he will not have any problem selling all of the goods.
